It’s time to give away some FREE books! This week on CPYU Bookshelf we’re giving away 3 copies of One.Life: Jesus Calls, We Follow by Scot McKnight!
McKnight was motivated to write One.Life by wrestling with one central question: What is a Christian? In a very creative and engaging manner, McKnight is providing an overview of the Christian faith. Here’s a question for our readers, for a chance to win a FREE book:
What other books do you think provide a helpful overview of the Christian faith?
On Monday (April 25) we will randomly select three winners from the comments. Only one comment (entry) per person, please.
Be sure to check out Facebook and Twitter for more ways to win FREE copies of One.Life.
I recently read "Filling up the Afflictions of Christ" by John Piper. The thing that struck me was how these men were not some kind of other worldly missionaries, they we followers of Christ that had a passion for the lost. Why should that be any different for me in my neighborhood? I should have a passion for the lost wherever I am.

ReplyDeleteI think without a doubt one of the most influential books that gives an overview of the Christian Faith would be Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.
ReplyDeleteAnother one that gives a more in depth look at the life of the believer would be The Cost of Discipleship by Bonhoeffer.
Doctrine by Mark Driscoll.
ReplyDeleteRagamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning and the Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard
ReplyDeleteI'd have to agree with Cory...
ReplyDeleteMere Christianity is definitely a good one to outline the specifics of WHY Christ, not just Judaism
Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis,
ReplyDeleteSpirit of the Disciplines by Dallas Willard &
The Prodigal God by Tim Keller
Doug
Mere Christianity- C.S. Lewis
ReplyDeleteSpirit of the Disciplines - Dallas Willard
The Prodigal God - Tim Keller
I've long thought that N.T. Wright's "Simply Christian" was a book I would hand to someone who knew nothing of God. Wright's book explores the entire Story of God in all of its acts.
ReplyDeleteI love how Wright presents Christianity as a Story, and not just as a series of moral commands or social theories.
I'm really enjoying reading Philip Yancey's book on "Prayer" He addresses many things that i have asked about prayer, or have struggled with in prayer, and gives motivation to just start praying.
ReplyDeleteGreat video - I'd love to read it!
ReplyDeleteRagamuffin Gospel and Messy Spirituality.
ReplyDeleteI am going with Vintage Jesus by Driscoll, or to go with a classic, Stott's Basic Christianity. Of course, Romans is pretty good...
ReplyDeleteI'll give my Catholic answer and say the Catechism. While it is only from a Catholic perspective, there are many teachings within it that apply to all Christians, and others that should be reflected upon.
ReplyDeleteFor a simple understanding of the Bible metanarrative, C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. Loved those stories as a kid.
The Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard. Definitely opened my eyes up to the realities of the Christian faith in every day life, and how the Gospel of Jesus changes everything.
ReplyDeleteWould love to own a copy. Looks like great read
ReplyDeleteI loved Velvet Elvis, Mere Christianity, and...oh, The Bible! It does a pretty good job at talking about the Christian faith.
ReplyDeleteMere Christianity by C.S. Lewis and The Reason for God by Timothy Keller are my two picks.
ReplyDeleteMere Christianity by C.S. Lewis and The Reason for God by Timothy Keller are my two picks.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to agree with several already listed, but I would add that The Naked Gospel by Andrew Farley is a good starter.
ReplyDeleteAnything by Walt Mueller - ha! I couldn't improve on the above suggestions and still wanted to get my name in the mix for a free book.
ReplyDeleteNT Wright's "Following Jesus."
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of NT Wright's books. He touches on a lot of the biggies in Christian faith/theology.
ReplyDeletePick me! Pick me!!
ReplyDeleteJesus Creed, by McKnight, The Reason for God, by Keller, and I would even suggest The Prodigal God, by Keller
ReplyDeleteFrom my own experience, John Stott's Basic Christianity and Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Cost of Discipleship should serve as the best combination.
